WHAT IS ATOPIC ECZEMA, WHAT CAUSES IT AND HOW CAN IT BE TREATED?

WHAT IS ATOPIC ECZEMA?

Atopic eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that causes itching, redness and scaling. The skin is inherently dry and has an impaired barrier function, so allergens are able to get in and cause inflammation. The result? Severe itching that affects your sleep and quality of life.

Atopic dermatitis is the commonest chronic skin condition worldwide. It affects about 20% of children and 5% of adults1. Atopic dermatitis often begins in early childhood, but it can also persist into adult life.

What are the symptoms of atopic ECZEMA?

Atopic eczema is characterised by symptoms such as an itchy, red rash, dry, scaly skin, and sometimes swollen or thickened skin. This chronic condition can result in painful cracks and fissures, and in severe cases even blistering. The severity of symptoms may vary depending on a number of factors, so it is important to match the individual treatments to the patient's needs.

What causes it?

Atopic eczema is associated with disturbances in the composition of the skin microbiome, characteristically with impaired microorganism diversity and overgrowth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. In simple terms, there are too many bad bacteria and not enough good bacteria on the skin.

The exact cause of atopic dermatitis is not known. Several factors play a part:

  • The skin’s barrier function is impaired: this makes it more permeable to irritants.
  • An overactive immune system, causing the skin to react more strongly to various stimuli.
  • Environmental factors such as allergens, irritants, changes in climate and stress
  • Skin care products may contain ingredients and preservatives that irritate the skin
  • Hereditary factors clearly have a role: parents with eczema are more likely to have a child with eczema.

How can it be treated?

The treatment of atopic eczema includes managing symptoms and also preventing flare-ups. Treatments can include the use of moisturisers to keep the skin hydrated, avoiding known allergens and irritants, such as certain soaps and detergents, and reducing stress. Medicines such as corticosteroid creams, immunomodulatory creams and antihistamines may also be prescribed to reduce the inflammation and itching. In severe cases, systemic drugs, light therapy or immunotherapy may be considered.

In addition to the treatments mentioned above, it is important to note that atopic eczema is also caused by impaired skin barrier function and dysbiosis in the skin microbiome. As a result, skin care products that respect and promote the microbiome, such as microbiome-safe products, can have a beneficial role in the treatment of eczema. Supporting a healthy skin microbiome can help to restore the skin's natural balance and reduce inflammation and irritation.

Proven effect of BACTERIA

Bacteria have been shown to play a part in combating eczema. Research has shown that restoring a healthy balance of bacteria on the skin can help to alleviate the symptoms. Good bacteria, such as certain lactobacilli, can suppress the overgrowth of harmful bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, reducing inflammation and itching.

BREAK THE VICIOUS CYCLE

In severe cases of eczema, a nasty "itch-scratch" cycle can develop. The more you scratch, the more you damage the skin barrier, allowing bacteria and allergens to enter. This can lead to more inflammation and itching, which in turn leads to more scratching.

Probiotics break the vicious cycle of atopic eczema by helping to repair, strengthen and protect the skin barrier. These good bacteria reduce inflammation, itching and redness, relieving the symptoms of eczema.

This cream is a miracle... I switched from using strong oral and topical cortisone products such as Elocom, Medrol, Prednisolone, etc. It got worse over the years. In just a week the YUN cream made me feel normal again, something I haven't experienced for over a year! Thank you!
