The Four Biggest Misconceptions About Eczema

De vier grootste misverstanden over eczeem

Misconception 1: Eczema is just dry skin

It’s understandable that people equate eczema with dry skin. The symptoms are similar: skin that feels tight, flaky, and uncomfortable. But the cause is fundamentally different. Dry skin occurs when the skin doesn’t retain enough moisture. You can solve this with a good moisturizing cream, and the problem will go away.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory condition in which the skin microbiome is structurally disrupted and the skin barrier is structurally weakened. Moisturizing helps, of course, but it doesn’t solve the underlying problem. That’s also why people with eczema find that moisturizing creams help as long as they apply them, but that the dryness and irritation return as soon as they stop.

Healthy skin retains moisture thanks to an intact microbiome and a strong skin barrier. With eczema, both are compromised. You can’t fix that with a day cream.

Misconception 2: Cortisone is the only real solution

Cortisone works. That’s why it’s prescribed so often and why people keep coming back to it. It quickly reduces inflammation and provides temporary relief for the skin.

But cortisone doesn’t restore the microbiome. It reduces the visible symptoms, but leaves the underlying cause unaddressed. As soon as you stop using it, the conditions are still ripe for a new flare-up. And with long-term use, the skin becomes thinner, making it more vulnerable to the very triggers that cause eczema.

That doesn’t mean that cortisone is bad or that you should avoid it. It means that cortisone can never be a long-term solution if used on its own. The question you should ask yourself isn’t “how do I suppress the inflammation,” but “why does this inflammation keep coming back?”

The answer lies in the microbiome.

Misconception 3: Eczema is contagious

This misconception is particularly persistent and particularly painful for people who live with it. Eczema is not contagious. You cannot spread it through skin-to-skin contact, by touching someone, through shared towels, or through any other form of contact.

Eczema is a condition caused by a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors that affect the microbiome and the immune system. It has nothing to do with hygiene and is not contagious.

People with eczema sometimes have to deal with stares from others their whole lives—from people who recoil at the sight of their skin, from comments that hurt even if they aren’t meant to be mean. If you’re reading this and know someone with eczema: just shake their hand, give them a hug, act normal. There’s nothing to be afraid of.

Misconception 4: Eczema is a lifelong condition

This is perhaps the most discouraging misconception. Many people believe that they have to learn to live with eczema, that there’s no going back, and that the best option is to manage the symptoms and keep flare-ups as short as possible.

And while it is true that atopic dermatitis is a chronic condition, this does not mean that the condition of the skin is unchangeable. The microbiome can be restored. The skin barrier can become stronger. The frequency and intensity of flare-ups can be significantly reduced if the underlying cause is addressed.

That takes time, consistency, and an approach that goes beyond merely treating the symptoms. But it is possible. 86 percent of people who use YUN ATO see improvement within four weeks. Not because the eczema disappears like snow in the sun, but because the microbiome begins to recover and the skin becomes better able to protect itself.

Living with eczema doesn’t have to be the end of the story.
