Athletes and Foot Problems: How to Prevent Athlete’s Foot Without Giving Up Your Training

3 mins reading time

Why Athletes Are More Prone to Injuries

The name says it all. Athlete’s foot is more common among people who exercise, and there are several reasons for this. Sweat plays a major role. During exercise, the feet produce more sweat than almost any other part of the body. That moisture becomes trapped inside closed shoes, which raises the temperature and humidity. Fungi thrive in exactly those conditions.

Microtrauma is a second factor. Intense exercise, especially running, causes minor damage to the skin on the foot—blisters, small tears, and softened areas. These provide a way in for pathogenic fungi that they would not otherwise have.

And then there’s the locker room. Shared showers, wet floors, towels that are kept around too long. The risk of exposure to fungi is high. But exposure alone isn’t enough. What determines whether you contract an infection is the resilience of your foot microbiome.

Exercise is good for the body, but not always for the microbiome

Intense exercise has a remarkable effect on the microbiome. Moderate exercise strengthens the immune system and promotes a healthy microbiome. However, overtraining and intense exercise without adequate recovery can temporarily weaken the immune system and put stress on the skin’s microbiome.

Athletes who train intensely, sweat a lot, and don’t allow themselves enough recovery time see the effects on their skin. Not only in the form of athlete’s foot, but also in other skin problems that indicate a weakened microbiome. That doesn’t mean you should exercise less. It means that recovery is just as important as training—even for your skin.

Practical Tips: What to Do Before, During, and After Exercise

When exercising, choose breathable socks, preferably made of merino wool or bamboo. These wick away moisture and keep your feet drier than synthetic alternatives. If you know you’ll be wearing your shoes for a long time, you can also apply a light protective cream that supports the microbiome.

While you’re working out, there’s not much you can actively do, but always wear flip-flops in communal showers and locker rooms. Not because the floor is dirty, but because wet surfaces are the perfect environment for the spread of mold.

After exercising, dry your feet thoroughly, including between your toes. Change your shoes if possible, so your athletic shoes can dry before you wear them again the next day. Spending a few hours barefoot after exercising, if the situation allows, gives your skin a chance to breathe.

Actively support the microbiome with YUN FNG after showering. The live probiotics strengthen the foot’s protective bacterial layer, make the environment less hospitable to pathogenic fungi, and help the skin recover from the minor damage caused by intense exercise.

Athlete’s foot is not a sports injury

A muscle injury is a sign that you’ve pushed yourself too hard. Athlete’s foot isn’t an injury; it’s a preventable infection. The only thing that distinguishes a foot that resists infection from one that gets infected is the state of its microbiome.

Take good care of your feet, even when there’s nothing wrong with them. The microbiome you build up during times of good health is the protection you have during times of vulnerability. And if you spend hours every week in closed-toe shoes, your feet deserve that attention.
