The Power of Good Bacteria
Prof. Sarah Lebeer’s research team consists of a group of scientists who are fascinated by bacteria and their positive impact on our health. This multidisciplinary team includes microbiologists, bioinformaticians, and bioengineers, and often collaborates with physicians, such as dermatologists, gynecologists, and primary care physicians. They study the microbiome of humans, animals, and plants, focusing primarily on lactobacilli isolated from various habitats to unravel their health-promoting properties. By applying molecular, immunological, and computational techniques, they seek to find new biotechnological solutions to protect humans, animals, and crops against diseases.
A Multidisciplinary Team to Combat Antibiotic Resistance
This research is driven by serious concerns about the widespread use of antibiotics and the lack of alternatives. The World Health Organization predicts that by 2050, more people are likely to die from antibiotic-resistant microbes than from cancer if we do not change our approach to antibiotic use.
